AI Retrieval
AI retrieval is a broad descriptive label for finding candidate information with learned representations, neural ranking, query transformation or other AI-assisted retrieval methods.
What it means
Retrieval selects evidence or context; it does not by itself generate the final answer or prove that a source supports a claim. The label is not a standard Google ranking system, so a useful description identifies the actual index, query processing and ranking stages.
Why it matters
In retrieval-augmented applications, a missing or inapplicable source constrains everything that follows. Teams need separate measures for candidate recall, final ranking, answer support and user-facing transparency instead of one undifferentiated AI quality score.
Example
An assistant retrieves an outdated pricing page before drafting an answer. The audit records a source-lifecycle failure in retrieval, removes the stale record and retests the answer rather than blaming generation alone.
Common mistakes
Do not claim access to hidden external retrieval traces, treat a retrieved passage as verified truth or assume every retrieval component triggers identical legal duties. From 2 August 2026, Article 50 transparency requirements apply to specified providers and deployers, depending on the system, output and context.
