Hybrid Retrieval
Hybrid retrieval combines candidate results or scores from different retrieval methods into one ranked result set.
What it means
A common design runs lexical and Vector Retrieval in parallel, then uses rank fusion such as reciprocal rank fusion before optional reranking. Other hybrids can combine fields, indexes or specialist retrievers.
Why it matters
Lexical methods preserve exact terms while vector methods can recover paraphrases. Fusion can improve coverage, but poorly balanced branches may duplicate results or suppress rare exact matches.

A policy search merges BM25 matches for an exact regulation number with embedding matches for its plain-language description, deduplicates documents and reranks the union.
