Hybrid Retrieval

Hybrid retrieval combines candidate results or scores from different retrieval methods into one ranked result set.

What it means

A common design runs lexical and Vector Retrieval in parallel, then uses rank fusion such as reciprocal rank fusion before optional reranking. Other hybrids can combine fields, indexes or specialist retrievers.

Why it matters

Lexical methods preserve exact terms while vector methods can recover paraphrases. Fusion can improve coverage, but poorly balanced branches may duplicate results or suppress rare exact matches.

Example

A policy search merges BM25 matches for an exact regulation number with embedding matches for its plain-language description, deduplicates documents and reranks the union.

Common mistakes

Do not call separate result tabs hybrid retrieval, add incomparable raw scores without calibration or omit branch-level recall. Document fusion, weights, deduplication and fallback behaviour.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

branch results, fusion method, weights, deduplication, final ranked sources

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can identify supplied tests where one branch contributes no useful website evidence or fusion removes it.

Recommendation prepared

The proposal distinguishes a source-content fix from a fusion or weighting change.

Approval preview

The user compares lexical, vector and final result sets before approving an action.

Execution

AYSA can update approved sources; fusion settings require an authorized retrieval-platform integration.

Verification

AYSA reruns branch and fused-result checks after source reindexing or owner-approved configuration changes.

Limits

AYSA cannot infer undisclosed fusion weights used by external search or AI platforms.
