Session Duration

Session duration is the measured elapsed time associated with an analytics session; GA4 reports average session duration in seconds for the selected sessions.

What it means

The Data API exposes `averageSessionDuration` as a session metric and `userEngagementDuration` as a separate measure of foreground engagement. The property, stream, timezone, session rules, event delivery and selected dimensions determine which sessions contribute to the average.

Why it matters

Keeping elapsed session duration distinct from active engagement prevents an open or background tab from being described as attentive reading and makes period comparisons reproducible.

Example

A mobile organic-landing-page segment reports an average session duration of 47 seconds and a separate engagement metric; the report retains both instead of relabeling either value as Dwell Time.

Common mistakes

Do not call average duration active reading time, compare different session segments, hide zero- or low-event sessions, average already averaged rows or interpret longer sessions as automatically better.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

property, stream, session segment, averageSessionDuration, engagement duration, event coverage, period

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can flag a duration report that mixes elapsed and engagement metrics, changes segments or lacks enough event coverage for interpretation.

Recommendation prepared

The review identifies the required behavior or outcome metric before proposing a bounded page or measurement change.

Approval preview

The reviewer sees the source metric, segment limitations and exact supported owned-site proposal.

Execution

AYSA can apply an approved supported WordPress content or event correction; it cannot reconstruct uncollected time or guarantee longer sessions.

Verification

Instrumentation and page behavior are checked immediately, then the same report contract is rerun after processing.

Limits

Background state, event delivery, consent and session rules constrain interpretation, and longer elapsed time can represent either useful engagement or friction.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is session duration the same as engagement time?

No. GA4 exposes average session duration and user engagement duration as distinct metrics.

Is Analytics session duration the same as search dwell time?

No. Session duration is site-side analytics data; search dwell time requires search-result click and return context that the publisher does not normally observe.
