Time to First Byte
Time to First Byte measures elapsed time from requesting a resource until the first response byte reaches the client.
What it means
For a document navigation, TTFB includes redirect, connection and server-processing time as observed by the client. It precedes HTML parsing and resource discovery, so a slow value can delay FCP and LCP, but it does not describe transfer completion or rendering.
Why it matters
TTFB helps distinguish an early network or backend delay from front-end rendering work. It is a supporting diagnostic rather than a Core Web Vital, and reducing it in isolation may have little user impact when the dominant problem occurs later.
Example
A cached article returns its first byte in 180 milliseconds, while an uncached product page waits 1.4 seconds for database queries. Comparing templates, cache states and server timing reveals a backend path that image or JavaScript changes cannot solve.
Common mistakes
Do not label TTFB as page render time, compare geographically different probes without context or remove necessary server work solely for one synthetic score. Check redirects, DNS, connection reuse, cache status and origin processing separately.
