Link Building
Backlink Gap
A backlink gap is the set of normalized referring sources observed linking to selected comparison sites but not observed linking to the target in the same dataset and snapshot.
What it means
The analysis freezes target and comparator scope, source database, crawl date, root-domain or URL mode, normalization rules and link-state filters. Absence means not observed under those rules, not proof that no link exists anywhere on the web.
Why it matters
A set-based definition reveals the denominator and prevents unrelated competitor links, stale records, duplicate subdomains or database coverage gaps from being called opportunities.
Example
Under one snapshot, 84 normalized domains link to two relevant competitors but not to the target; after removing irrelevant directories, dead pages and existing relationships, 19 sources remain for editorial qualification.
Common mistakes
Do not compare root domains with exact URLs, mix snapshots, treat every absent source as relevant, confuse unobserved with nonexistent, copy competitors' manipulative links or promise acquisition.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
target, comparator, database, snapshot, scope mode, normalized source, link state, relevance
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can identify mismatched scopes, duplicate source groups, stale pages and irrelevant or policy-risk entries in a gap set.
Recommendation prepared
The raw difference is narrowed to a manually reviewable editorial prospect set without copying competitor tactics.
Approval preview
The reviewer sees the exact source sets, exclusion reasons, live evidence and any proposed outreach research.
Execution
AYSA can export an approved prospect brief; it cannot create, purchase or guarantee third-party links.
Verification
Prospect status and any later observed link are recorded against new snapshots without rewriting the original gap calculation.
Limits
Crawler coverage and timing vary, competitor selection biases the result and an observed gap does not establish SEO value.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Does a backlink gap prove that the target has no link from a source?
No. It means the selected dataset did not observe one under the declared snapshot and normalization rules.
Is every competitor-only referring domain a good outreach target?
No. Relevance, editorial fit, live status, relationship and policy risk require separate review.
