Backlink Audit
A backlink audit is a versioned review of observed links from external source pages to a declared target site, used to verify coverage, live status, context, attributes, ownership evidence and policy relevance.
What it means
The audit freezes provider exports and crawl dates, normalizes source and target URLs, deduplicates repeated observations and samples live pages. It remains distinct from a Link Audit, which can also cover internal and outbound links, and from a Backlink Profile, which is the dataset being reviewed rather than the review process.
Why it matters
This boundary makes every Outreach, Monitoring or exceptional disavow recommendation traceable to a source record and prevents incomplete crawler data or one proprietary score from becoming a destructive instruction.
Example
An audit joins two dated provider exports for `example.com`, groups duplicate source URLs, checks whether sampled links are live, separates owned paid placements from unsolicited mentions and routes records to no action, monitor, Outreach or manual policy review.
Common mistakes
Do not call one export exhaustive, merge internal-link defects into the inbound scope, count duplicate rows as evidence, treat first-seen as publication time, infer intent from a domain score or export every warning into a Disavow File.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
target scope, provider, export time, source URL, target URL, attribute, live status, ownership evidence
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can identify duplicate records, stale observations, inaccessible sources, inconsistent target scope and decisions supported only by a vendor score.
Recommendation prepared
The workflow preserves raw snapshots and routes each normalized record to no action, monitor, outreach or manual policy review with explicit evidence.
Approval preview
The user sees provider coverage, row-level observations, live samples, any AI-assisted triage, reviewer overrides and the exact proposed queue.
Execution
AYSA can normalize imports, record approved decisions and export evidence; it cannot make a crawler exhaustive, remove third-party links or submit a disavow file.
Verification
A later snapshot checks whether reviewed sources remain live and whether approved owned-site corrections were applied without rewriting the original evidence.
Limits
Crawler coverage and classification can change, false positives remain possible, and transparency records or human review do not automatically certify AI Act compliance.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Is a backlink audit the same as a link audit?
No. A backlink audit is limited to inbound observations; a link audit may also include internal and outbound records.
Does a backlink audit automatically create a disavow file?
No. Most records may require no action, monitoring or further evidence; disavow remains an exceptional, separately approved workflow.
