Cited Source Optimization
Cited Source Optimization is the controlled improvement of a specific resource already observed as a cited or displayed source, while preserving its claim evidence, identity and citation history.
What it means
The resource is reviewed for whether the visible claim is supported, current and attributable; whether the final URL, canonical and access state are stable; and whether users can find the underlying method or primary record. W3C annotation separates a target resource from the body that refers to it, and provenance records the activities and versions behind a change.
Why it matters
Resource-level maintenance can correct a weak or stale destination without assuming that the external citation will persist or that every displayed link supports the same claim.
Example
A report cited beside a market-size sentence is updated with a corrected sample period and version note on the same protected URL; the old capture remains linked to the old version, and a new destination review records the correction.
Common mistakes
Do not change the cited claim silently, overwrite historical evidence, redirect to a generic homepage, confuse a sources panel with claim-level support, remove authorship, hide corrections or promise citation retention.
