Content Fingerprinting
Content fingerprinting creates a compact signature from an asset or text so systems can identify an exact version or estimate whether two items are substantially similar.
What it means
A cryptographic hash detects exact byte changes, while perceptual or semantic fingerprints tolerate defined transformations. A fingerprint does not by itself record who created the content, why it changed or whether it was AI-generated.
Why it matters
Fingerprints support duplicate detection, approval integrity and drift Monitoring, but their thresholds and collision risks must match the use. Provenance needs separate signed or source-linked evidence.
Example
A publishing workflow stores the SHA-256 hash of an approved article and a separate similarity fingerprint; the first detects any edit, while the second helps find syndicated variants.
Common mistakes
Do not call a private hash a provenance credential, treat similarity as copyright proof, infer authorship from a match or claim a fingerprint alone satisfies Article 50 marking and interoperability requirements.
