Editorial Approval
Editorial approval is the recorded decision by an authorized person or organization to publish a fixed content version after required reviews and conditions are satisfied.
What it means
It differs from Manual Review: reviewers may verify individual risks, while the approver accepts responsibility for the publication decision. Under Article 50 guidance, human review or editorial control is relevant to certain AI-generated public-interest text, but provider marking is a separate obligation.
Why it matters
Clear approval ownership prevents drafts, stale sources and unresolved warnings from reaching production. It also identifies the responsible version and decision maker when content must be corrected or withdrawn.
Example
An editor approves version 14 of a policy explainer after factual and legal review. A later automated rewrite creates version 15 and returns the page to pending instead of inheriting version 14's approval.
Common mistakes
Do not approve a mutable document, confuse copyediting with publication authority, omit decision conditions or claim editorial control automatically exempts every AI-generated output.
