Query Fan Out
Query fan-out is a technique in which a system issues multiple concurrent, related searches across subtopics or data sources to gather evidence for a broader request.
What it means
Google documents that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out. The generated subqueries are system operations, not additional searches typed by the user, and their exact contents may remain unavailable to publishers.
Why it matters
Fan-out can cover comparisons, constraints and supporting facts that one query would miss. It can also propagate a mistaken interpretation across several branches, so evidence diversity does not remove the need for grounding and relevance checks.
Example
For `how to fix a weedy lawn`, branches may seek chemical treatments, non-chemical removal and prevention before the system composes one response with supporting links.
Common mistakes
Do not invent hidden fan-out queries as ranking data, build a page for each guessed branch or imply that Google always uses the technique. Treat documented examples as system behaviour, not a publisher Keyword list.
