AI Overviews
AI Overviews
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google may display for some searches with supporting links and paths for further exploration.
What it means
Google decides when an overview is useful and which sources support it. The same technical and content foundations used for Search apply: pages must be accessible, indexable and eligible to appear with accurate, helpful information.
Why it matters
An overview can change how users evaluate a question and which sources they visit. Teams therefore need to monitor both traditional results and observed overview citations without assuming a stable layout or guaranteed inclusion.
Example
For a fixed troubleshooting query, a team can save the overview, cited URLs, date and location, then compare that evidence after updating a technical guide. The observation does not prove the update caused a citation.
Common mistakes
There is no special AI Overview file or guaranteed schema type. Avoid changing pages solely to imitate an observed answer, and never promise a citation or ranking.
