Source Citation

A source citation is a reference that lets a reader or system locate the specific material offered as support for a statement.

What it means

A useful web citation identifies the source, links to the closest stable primary evidence and makes clear which claim it supports. Attribution names origin or responsibility; provenance records history; neither automatically supplies a precise citation.

Why it matters

Claim-level citations shorten the path from assertion to evidence and make updates, corrections and reuse easier to audit. They do not transfer the cited source's authority to unrelated claims.

Example

A sentence about Article 50 links to the exact EU regulation or Commission guidance and states the applicable actor and date instead of linking only to a general AI policy homepage.

Common mistakes

Do not cite a search-results page, secondary summary when a primary source exists or one source for an entire paragraph of unrelated claims. A citation proves where information came from, not that it is true.
