SEO Basics
Search intent
Search intent is the outcome a person is trying to achieve with a query, such as learning, comparing, locating or completing a transaction.
What it means
Intent is inferred from query language, the result formats search engines select and the tasks users complete. One phrase can contain mixed or changing intent, so page decisions need current evidence rather than a permanent label.
Why it matters
A technically optimized page can still disappoint when its format or depth does not match the task. Intent guides whether the best response is a definition, guide, category, comparison, tool or transactional page.
Example
“Canonical tag” usually needs an explanation and implementation guidance, while “canonical audit service” signals a commercial evaluation. Combining both into one generic page can weaken each purpose.
Common mistakes
Do not classify intent from a single modifier, copy the current top results blindly or create several near-identical pages for tiny query variations.
