SEO Basics
Short Tail Keyword
A short-tail keyword is a brief, relatively broad target phrase that names a category or topic with limited qualifiers and often leaves several plausible intents.
What it means
Word count is only a shortcut: breadth, specificity and result ambiguity matter more than a fixed one- or two-word rule. Many practitioners use `short-tail Keyword` and `head keyword` interchangeably.
Why it matters
Broad targets can organize research and parent topics, but volume alone does not make them suitable page assignments. A narrower phrase may better express the audience, task and achievable destination.
Example
`accounting software` is short-tail because it leaves audience, features and action open; `accounting software for Romanian construction firms` adds decisive constraints.
Common mistakes
Do not enforce a universal word-count cutoff, assume every short phrase has high volume or create broad pages that satisfy no clear need. Record provider definitions and market data.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
word count, modifiers, intent spread, volume source, assigned page
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can flag broad targets prioritized only by volume or duplicated under a head-keyword label.
Recommendation prepared
The proposal records breadth and intent ambiguity before choosing a parent page or narrower cluster.
Approval preview
The user reviews provider definitions, intent spread, destination fit and the head-keyword overlap note.
Execution
AYSA can update the approved keyword hierarchy; protected duplicate URLs remain unchanged pending evidence.
Verification
AYSA checks that the target has one accountable destination and that narrower clusters remain linked correctly.
Limits
AYSA cannot impose a universal cutoff or merge the protected Head Keyword URL without external evidence.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Is a short-tail keyword always one or two words?
