Crawl trap
A crawl trap is a site pattern that exposes a crawler to a very large or effectively infinite set of low-value URL variations.
What it means
Common sources include unrestricted faceted filters, calendars with endless dates, session identifiers and parameters that can be reordered or repeated. Each generated link appears discoverable even when its content duplicates a small set of useful pages.
Why it matters
On large sites, traps can consume server resources and delay discovery of new or changed canonical content. They also complicate analytics and index reports by multiplying URLs that the business never intended to manage separately.
