Digital Authority

Digital authority is a bounded assessment of how clearly a digital entity is identified and how credibly its work is recognized across relevant controlled and independent online sources.

What it means

The assessment must name the entity, subject, audience, source set and observation date. Organization identifiers, consistent profiles, attributable work and independent references can support it, but repetition alone is not endorsement. Google says organization markup can help disambiguate an organization; that does not create a public digital-authority score.

Why it matters

Separating identity clarity from independent reliance prevents duplicate profiles, syndicated claims and social reach from being counted as equivalent evidence.

Example

A medical association is consistently identified by legal name and official URL, publishes reviewed guidance and is cited by a regulator; copied directory profiles are recorded as identity corroboration, not independent clinical endorsement.

Common mistakes

Do not count every mention equally, merge namesakes, treat `sameAs` as proof of endorsement, convert engagement into expertise, hide contradictory sources, aggregate vendor scores or claim Google recognizes a universal digital-authority metric.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

entity identifiers, namesakes, subject, controlled sources, independent sources, contradictions, dates, classification provenance

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can identify entity collisions, unsupported authority labels and repeated controlled claims misclassified as independent recognition.

Recommendation prepared

The assessment separates identity, authorship and independent reliance, retaining uncertainty for disputed or incomplete sources.

Approval preview

The reviewer sees entity candidates, source class, extraction evidence, AI-assisted classification provenance, uncertainty and proposed corrections.

Execution

AYSA can apply approved owned-site identity and structured-data corrections on supported platforms; it cannot alter third-party records or certify reputation.

Verification

A recrawl verifies approved owned-site identifiers, while external observations retain their source and capture date.

Limits

Open-web evidence is incomplete and mutable, and provenance or human review does not automatically certify AI Act or legal compliance.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is digital authority an official Google metric?

No. Google documents identity and content guidance but exposes no universal metric with this name.

Does an organization `sameAs` link prove authority?

No. It can help identify an entity; independent recognition requires separate evidence.
