External link
An external link is a hyperlink whose resolved destination falls outside the site boundary declared for the analysis.
What it means
The boundary may use origin, host, registrable domain or an owned-property set, so protocol, subdomain and cross-domain brand rules must be explicit. When viewed from the owned source page, the same hyperlink is also an Outbound link under an identical boundary; external describes destination classification, while outbound emphasises direction.
Why it matters
A declared boundary makes external-link counts reproducible and prevents subdomains, regional domains, redirects and controlled properties from changing category silently.
Example
With an exact-host boundary, a link from `www.example.com` to `support.example.com` is external; with an approved owned-domain set it may be grouped as cross-property instead, while the resolved destination remains recorded.
Common mistakes
Do not assume every absolute URL is external, strip redirects before preserving the original href, mix host and registrable-domain rules, label external citations harmful, add Nofollow automatically or pretend external and outbound are unrelated sets.
