A link farm is a collection of pages or sites primarily created, controlled or coordinated to manufacture links for manipulating search rankings rather than to serve an independent audience purpose.
What it means
Dense cross-linking is a possible observation, not sufficient proof. A defensible assessment combines ownership or operator evidence, repeated templates, low independent utility, placement transactions, synchronized creation, reciprocal patterns and destination concentration. Legitimate directories, corporate properties or communities can also be densely connected.
Why it matters
Requiring purpose and coordination evidence prevents false accusations based only on topology, hosting, visual similarity or low-quality content.
