Link Graph
A link graph is a versioned directed-graph representation in which declared web resources are nodes and observed hyperlinks from a source resource to a destination resource are edges.
What it means
A defensible graph states the crawl scope, observation time, canonicalisation rules, redirects, edge direction, duplicate handling, relationship attributes and failed fetches. It is a model of collected evidence, not a complete copy of the web or Google's private systems. Metrics derived from it inherit every omission and normalisation choice in the dataset.
Why it matters
The data contract makes graph comparisons reproducible and prevents analysts from treating missing links, redirected URLs or vendor-specific coverage as universal facts.
Example
A crawl snapshot models 18,400 canonical URLs as nodes and 126,000 crawlable links as directed edges, preserving source page, destination, anchor, `rel` values, discovery time and redirect resolution.
Common mistakes
Do not call one crawler's sample “the web graph,” merge redirects without a record, discard failed fetches silently, treat repeated template links as unique publisher votes, infer private intent from topology or promise rankings from one graph metric.
