Analytics
Referral traffic
Referral traffic is measured website activity whose analytics session source and medium identify an external referring site and classify the session as Referral under the chosen channel rules.
What it means
GA4 exposes session source, session medium, source/medium and session channel dimensions. Manual campaign parameters, exclusions, redirects, cross-domain setup and payment providers can change classification, so the referring hostname alone does not establish a reliable marketing source.
Why it matters
A precise classification distinguishes sessions actually collected on the site from backlinks, browser referrer headers, affiliate campaigns and advertising Clicks that belong to different evidence sets.
Example
A publisher link produces sessions with the publisher as session source and `referral` as medium; a payment-domain self-referral is investigated as cross-domain configuration noise rather than credited as acquisition.
Common mistakes
Do not equate backlinks with visits, leave internal or payment domains as acquisition sources, overwrite campaign UTMs, count bot requests as Analytics sessions or infer endorsement from a referrer.

Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can flag unexpected self-referrals, payment domains, missing campaign context or classification changes in a supported report.
Recommendation prepared
The review separates measurement configuration from the external-link relationship before proposing a supported fix.
Approval preview
The reviewer sees the source rows, affected journey and exact supported WordPress or tagging change.
Execution
AYSA can apply an approved supported WordPress instrumentation change; Analytics property or cross-domain settings require an authorized connection and separate approval.
Verification
A controlled referral visit, landing event and later processed session classification are checked as separate stages.
Limits
Consent, referrer policy, apps, redirects, blockers and channel rules constrain measurement, and referral classification does not prove link value or endorsement.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Does every backlink create referral traffic?
No. A user must follow it and the visit must be collected and classified; blocking, redirects, apps and campaign parameters can change the result.
Is a payment-provider referral a new acquisition source?
Often it is measurement noise caused by the checkout journey or cross-domain configuration and should be investigated before attribution.
