Robots.txt

Robots.txt is a text file at a site's root that tells compliant crawlers which URL paths they may or may not request.

What it means

The file applies crawl rules by user agent and path under the Robots Exclusion Protocol. It manages crawler access, not confidentiality, and a disallowed URL can still be discovered or indexed from other signals because the crawler cannot read page-level directives on a blocked page.

Why it matters

A single broad disallow rule can hide important content or rendering resources from crawlers. Conversely, precise rules can reduce requests to duplicate, faceted or operational URLs without changing the public page itself.

Example

Before disallowing `/search/`, compare the pattern with real URLs and test representative matches. Keep product and article paths crawlable, publish the rule, then verify the live file and inspect crawl behavior rather than assuming every bot interpreted the draft correctly.

Common mistakes

Do not use robots.txt to protect private information or as a substitute for `Noindex`. Avoid untested wildcards, blocking CSS or JavaScript required for rendering, and changing rules repeatedly merely to redistribute crawl activity.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

Live robots.txt response, user-agent groups, path rules, affected crawl URLs, rendering resources

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can compare live robots rules with discovered URLs and flag important pages or resources that a rule appears to block.

Recommendation prepared

The recommendation identifies the exact rule, matching URL samples and the intended crawler behavior before a file change is considered.

Approval preview

The user reviews the current and proposed lines together with matched and unaffected URL examples.

Execution

AYSA prepares the change and verification steps; server-level or unsupported robots.txt files require implementation by the site owner or developer.

Verification

AYSA reloads the public file, retests representative paths and records whether the deployed rule matches the approved preview.

Limits

Robots.txt is voluntary crawler guidance, not access control, and it cannot guarantee deindexing or recrawl timing.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Can robots.txt reliably prevent Google from indexing a page?

No. A disallowed URL can still be discovered from links or other signals. Use an accessible noindex directive, authentication, or removal when the goal is to keep content out of search.
