SEO Basics

Googlebot

Googlebot is Google’s web crawler used to discover, crawl and refresh pages for Google Search.

What it means

Googlebot follows links, reads sitemaps, fetches resources and processes pages so Google can understand and index web content. Technical SEO often checks whether important pages are accessible and renderable for Googlebot.

Why it matters

It matters because pages Googlebot cannot access, crawl or render properly may not appear correctly in search.

Example

A Robots.txt rule that blocks important product pages can prevent Googlebot from Crawling them.

Common mistakes

Common mistakes include blocking CSS or JavaScript needed for rendering, assuming Googlebot sees a page exactly like a browser, or wasting crawl paths on low-value URLs.
