Soft 404
A soft 404 is a URL that returns a success response but appears to search systems to be missing, empty or an error page.
What it means
The server often returns 200 even though the rendered page says nothing was found, contains almost no main content or failed to load critical data. Search engines may exclude the URL because its body contradicts the successful status.
Why it matters
Soft 404s waste diagnostic attention and can keep broken application states looking technically healthy. They also make analytics, crawl reports and user recovery less reliable because the response code does not describe the actual outcome.
Example
If a client-rendered product route shows “Product not found” after an API failure while the server returns 200, fix the application to return a real 404 for a missing product and restore a valid 200 page when the product still exists.
Common mistakes
Do not add filler text merely to avoid classification, redirect missing URLs to an irrelevant category, or assume every thin page is a soft 404. Inspect rendered content, data dependencies and the intended resource state.
