Synthetic Query
A synthetic query is a generated search input created by a model, rule or researcher rather than recorded from an actual user's search event.
What it means
Synthetic queries can expand sparse training data, probe retrieval behaviour or test unobserved edge cases. Their generator, seed material, constraints and intended use are part of the data record.
Why it matters
Generated inputs make controlled evaluation possible when real queries are rare or private. They can also mirror generator bias and overstate coverage, so results must be reported separately from Search Console or customer demand.
Example
A team generates fifty misspelled product-code queries to test retrieval robustness, labels them synthetic and evaluates whether the correct product remains in the top five results.
Common mistakes
Do not publish synthetic-query volume as user demand, let generated examples contaminate a held-out test set or create landing pages for every artificial variant. Validate representativeness with observed evidence.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
generator version, seed input, generation rule, use split, observed-query comparison
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can flag generated inputs mixed into demand reports or evaluation sets without provenance.
Recommendation prepared
The proposal separates synthetic, observed and customer-reported questions before analysis.
Approval preview
The user reviews the generated set, origin labels, intended test and exclusions.
Execution
AYSA can maintain labelled evaluation data; it does not publish synthetic queries as pages automatically.
Verification
AYSA checks that reports and packs preserve each query's source classification.
Limits
Synthetic coverage cannot substitute for representative real-user evidence.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Does a synthetic query prove that people search for that wording?
