AI Overviews

AI Overview query

An AI Overview query is a user-submitted Google Search query recorded for a test that observes whether an AI Overview appears and what the visible Overview contains.

What it means

The query record includes the literal text plus country, language, device, account state and capture time. Google says AI Overviews appear only when its systems determine they add value and often do not trigger. Google also documents possible query fan-out, but the submitted query does not reveal the related searches, models or retrieval steps used internally.

Why it matters

Separating input from trigger state prevents a non-triggering query from being treated as a failed rank and prevents analysts from inventing unseen fan-out queries.

Example

The same Romanian question is tested logged out on mobile and desktop; one run shows an AI Overview with two links and the other shows classic results, so both outcomes remain attached to distinct contexts.

Common mistakes

Do not call every query an Overview trigger, infer fan-out terms, discard non-trigger runs, combine countries, rewrite the literal input after capture, treat absence as a penalty or guarantee future triggering.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

literal query, country, language, device, account state, timestamp, trigger state, Overview boundary, visible links

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can identify changed query strings, mixed contexts, non-trigger runs removed from samples and inferred fan-out presented as observed data.

Recommendation prepared

The workflow freezes the submitted input and defines trigger, non-trigger, unavailable and ambiguous outcomes before capture.

Approval preview

The user sees the exact query set, contexts, sampling rule, trigger definition and prohibition on inferred internal searches.

Execution

AYSA can run supported Google Search observations; it cannot force an Overview or expose Google's private fan-out.

Verification

Each run appends its literal input, context and visible trigger state without rewriting previous observations.

Limits

Trigger evidence does not explain internal selection, and logged captures or review do not automatically certify AI Act or legal compliance.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Does every AI Overview query trigger an Overview?

No. Google says AI Overviews appear only when its systems determine they add value and often do not trigger.

Does the submitted query reveal query fan-out?

No. Google documents that fan-out may occur, but the private related searches are not exposed by the input alone.
