AI Overviews

AI Overview source

An AI Overview source is an external resource displayed or linked as a supporting website within a captured Google Search AI Overview.

What it means

The source record represents the resolved page or site, while the citation record represents the UI element connecting the Overview to that resource. Google says AI features surface supporting links and that sets of responses and links can vary. Display does not prove that the resource was the only input, that every statement came from it or that it will reappear.

Why it matters

Separating resource identity from the display edge makes domain, page, duplicate and claim-support analysis auditable without inventing a private retrieval graph.

Example

Two Overview UI elements resolve through tracking URLs to the same canonical article; one source record is retained with two display-edge records for that capture.

Common mistakes

Do not count tracking URLs as different sources, collapse distinct pages to a domain, infer exclusive authorship, treat display as endorsement, omit canonical resolution, combine captures or promise recurrence.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

query, display element, raw URL, redirect chain, resolved page, canonical, associated response region, capture time

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can identify duplicate tracking URLs, domain-level collapsing and displayed resources reported as exclusive generation inputs.

Recommendation prepared

The workflow resolves the resource, preserves every display edge and separates claim-support review from source identity.

Approval preview

The reviewer sees the captured display, URL resolution, canonical evidence, associated region and proposed source record.

Execution

AYSA can store approved source and edge records and monitor changes; it cannot expose Google's private input set.

Verification

Recaptures create new display states while page identity and redirect changes remain historically traceable.

Limits

Canonicalization and UI association can be uncertain, and provenance or human review does not automatically certify AI Act or legal compliance.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI Overview source the same as its citation element?

No. The source is the resolved resource; the citation is the visible UI element that points to it.

Does source display prove that every Overview claim came from that page?

No. Claim support and generation causation require separate evidence that the interface does not expose.
