AI Overviews
AI Overview citation
An AI Overview citation is a visible link or source-attribution element associated with a captured Google Search AI Overview.
What it means
Google describes AI Overviews as surfacing supporting links and has documented inline links, site displays and source previews whose presentation can evolve. The record must identify the visible UI element, destination, associated response region and capture context. “Citation” is an analytical label for the displayed Attribution, not Google's disclosure of a private retrieval edge.
Why it matters
UI-specific evidence distinguishes a linked response span from a side-panel source and prevents display changes from being misreported as gains or losses in a fixed citation rank.
Example
An inline link beside an Overview bullet resolves to an article; the record stores the bullet, link position, final URL, query and screenshot without claiming that the article alone produced the text.
Common mistakes
Do not count classic organic results, infer retrieval causation, assign unsupported citation ranks, merge source cards and inline links, omit final destinations, ignore query context or promise persistence.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
query, Overview boundary, citation element, response region, raw URL, resolved URL, display type, capture time
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can identify classic results counted as citations, source-display types mixed together and destinations missing exact UI evidence.
Recommendation prepared
The record stores the Google-specific element and separately evaluates destination relevance to the visible response region.
Approval preview
The user sees the screenshot, UI selector, response context, destination, AI-assisted alignment and uncertainty.
Execution
AYSA can monitor supported captures and approve records; it cannot influence or inspect Google's private source-selection process.
Verification
Later observations preserve changes in display type, destination and presence as distinct capture states.
Limits
Google can change availability and presentation, and provenance or human review does not automatically certify AI Act or legal compliance.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Is an AI Overview citation a public Google ranking position?
No. It is a captured UI element whose presentation and occurrence can change.
Does a displayed source prove it generated the Overview sentence?
No. The interface observation does not expose Google's private generation or retrieval causation.
