Technical SEO

Cloaking

Cloaking presents materially different content to search engines and users with the intent to manipulate rankings and mislead people.

What it means

Examples include crawler-only keywords or one topic for search systems and another for visitors. Device adaptation, accessibility, paywalls following applicable guidance and Dynamic Rendering with equivalent content are not automatically cloaking; intent and substantive parity matter.

Why it matters

Cloaking violates Google spam policies and may trigger lower visibility or removal. It can also appear after a compromise or faulty cache rule, so detection must compare agents, locations, cookies and rendered states before assigning cause.

Example

A compromised plugin injects gambling links only when the requesting user agent is Googlebot, hiding them from administrators. Agent and clean-cookie comparisons expose the divergence and incident response removes the malicious code.

Common mistakes

Do not call every mobile variation cloaking, intentionally add crawler-only text or whitelist search bots around access controls without policy review. Avoid checking only source HTML when a script or edge worker changes the rendered response.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

Crawler and user responses, rendered text and links, cookies, edge rules, security indicators

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can detect substantive agent-dependent differences and distinguish likely cache, personalization or compromise patterns.

Recommendation prepared

The proposal removes manipulative or malicious divergence and restores one defensible content policy across comparable requests.

Approval preview

The user reviews paired evidence, suspected configuration or code and any incident-response implications before approval.

Execution

AYSA can disable approved WordPress injections and correct accessible rules; compromised infrastructure may require security owners.

Verification

AYSA repeats clean-session tests across agents and regions, scans rendered links and confirms intended legitimate variations remain.

Limits

AYSA cannot prove human intent from technical output alone and does not conceal differences that violate search policies.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is serving responsive layouts to different devices cloaking?

Not by itself. Cloaking involves deceptive substantive differences intended to manipulate search systems, not ordinary device adaptation.
