Co Citation
Co-citation is the observed relationship created when one or more source documents cite two distinct resources together.
What it means
Henry Small introduced document co-citation as a relationship whose strength can be measured by how often later documents jointly cite a pair. It differs from bibliographic coupling, where two documents share references. Web analysis may adapt the graph pattern, but a mention near another name is not automatically a citation and Google exposes no co-citation score.
Why it matters
A precise graph definition makes the dataset reproducible and prevents analysts from turning textual proximity into an assumed endorsement, Entity Relationship or ranking signal.
Example
Three standards reports independently link to both a protocol specification and its test suite; a dated graph records three joint-citing sources and the exact cited URLs, without inferring agreement between the two resources.
Common mistakes
Do not confuse co-citation with co-occurrence or bibliographic coupling, count syndicated copies as independent sources, ignore URL consolidation, infer sentiment, claim causation, hide the time window or promise a search benefit.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
source document, cited resource A, cited resource B, link or citation evidence, context, duplicate status, capture date, model provenance
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can identify unsupported co-citation claims, duplicate source inflation and textual co-occurrence mislabeled as citation.
Recommendation prepared
The graph records normalized resource pairs, direct evidence, time window and context without inferring endorsement.
Approval preview
The reviewer sees each source passage, resolved destinations, deduplication, AI-assisted extraction provenance, uncertainty and proposed relationship.
Execution
AYSA can store an approved co-citation graph and monitoring rule; it does not create third-party citations or alter source documents.
Verification
Recrawls append observed additions, removals and redirects while preserving the earlier snapshot.
Limits
Crawl coverage and extraction can be incomplete, and provenance or human review does not automatically certify AI Act or legal compliance.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Is co-citation the same as co-occurrence?
No. Co-citation requires a defined citation relationship; co-occurrence only records items appearing together.
Does one co-citation prove that two resources agree?
No. The source may compare, criticize or distinguish them; context requires separate review.
