Entity Mapping
Entity mapping is a documented association between two representations of an entity, such as a website record and an internal catalogue identifier, under a stated identity or correspondence rule.
What it means
A mapping may express exact identity, a narrower correspondence or a transformation between schemas. Exact-identity properties such as sameAs require stronger evidence than topical similarity, shared names or membership in the same organization.
Why it matters
Mappings allow systems to join records without rewriting every source, but an incorrect exact match can merge attributes and relationships that belong to different people, products or organizations.
Example
A merchant maps product SKU A-17 to its canonical catalogue record and keeps an old supplier code as a source-specific alias; it does not mark a compatible accessory as the same product.
Common mistakes
Do not use sameAs for related entities, discard source-system identifiers or create irreversible merges before namesakes, versions and regional variants are reviewed.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
source identifier, target identifier, mapping type, identity evidence, source system
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can flag supplied mappings that confuse similarity with identity, lose source identifiers or merge incompatible variants.
Recommendation prepared
The proposal states the mapping semantics and preserves provenance and rollback before any exact-identity assertion.
Approval preview
The user sees both records, identifiers, evidence, proposed mapping type and affected downstream data.
Execution
AYSA can apply approved supported structured-data or owned-catalogue mappings where connected platforms permit them.
Verification
AYSA resolves both identifiers, validates the intended semantics and tests affected joins after the approved change.
Limits
AYSA cannot compel external platforms to accept a mapping and does not treat sameAs markup as an identity guarantee.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Does sameAs mean two pages discuss similar things?
No. Schema.org defines it as a reference that unambiguously indicates the item's identity.
Can a mapping preserve source-specific identifiers?
Yes. Keeping provenance and original IDs makes reconciliation, corrections and rollback safer.
