Featured snippet

A featured snippet is a special Google result box that presents a descriptive excerpt before its source link.

What it means

Google systems select a page and passage when they judge it useful for a search request. Featured snippets can also appear within related-question groups, and publishers cannot mark a page as the selected answer.

Why it matters

The format can answer part of a question directly while still linking to the source. Clear, visible and well-supported answers improve page usefulness, but selection remains automated and query specific.

Example

A government page defines an application deadline in a visible sentence followed by exceptions and official dates. Google may extract that sentence, while users can visit the source for eligibility details.

Common mistakes

Do not add unsupported featured-snippet schema, hide answer text or guarantee position zero. Avoid shortening an answer until it becomes inaccurate, especially for legal, medical or financial topics.
