First Input Delay

First Input Delay was a field metric measuring the wait before the browser began handling a user's first discrete interaction.

What it means

FID captured only input delay, not event-handler execution or the next rendered frame. Google replaced it with Interaction to Next Paint as a Core Web Vital in 2024 because INP observes responsiveness across the visit and includes more of the interaction lifecycle.

Why it matters

Historical reports and older audits still contain FID, so teams must interpret those records without presenting the metric as current. Comparing it directly with INP is misleading because the two values cover different interactions and timing components.

Example

An archived 2023 dashboard shows a 45-millisecond FID, but a current product filter still takes 480 milliseconds through the next paint. The old result only describes initial input waiting and cannot establish that present-day interaction responsiveness is good.

Common mistakes

Do not call FID a current Core Web Vital, convert its threshold into an INP target or treat a low historical value as proof of healthy modern responsiveness. Preserve dated records while migrating active Monitoring and alerts to INP.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

Legacy FID reports, report date, current INP data, interaction coverage, dashboard configuration

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can flag active reports that still present FID as current and map their purpose to available INP evidence.

Recommendation prepared

The proposal archives historical context, updates labels and moves current alerts to INP without pretending the metrics are equivalent.

Approval preview

The user reviews affected dashboards, retained historical fields and the new INP source before migration.

Execution

AYSA can update supported reporting labels and configurations; third-party analytics dashboards may require their owner.

Verification

AYSA confirms that dated FID history remains identifiable and that current reporting receives valid INP observations.

Limits

AYSA cannot transform historical FID measurements into missing INP values or reconstruct interactions that were never recorded.
