Image Indexing
Image indexing is the processing through which a search engine records an image and its contextual signals for eligible search features.
What it means
Google can discover supported image files referenced by standard HTML image elements and image sitemaps. The landing page, nearby text, alt text, filename, crawl access, stable URL and image quality help systems understand the asset; CSS background images are not indexed as ordinary content images.
Why it matters
A technically optimized file can remain undiscovered or poorly understood when its landing page is blocked, context is weak or the URL changes constantly. Indexing remains a search-engine decision and should not be confused with merely hosting or submitting the file.
Example
An original product photo uses a stable crawlable URL in an `img` element, descriptive alt text and nearby product information on an indexable canonical page. The CDN host is accessible and included in an Image Sitemap for additional discovery.
Common mistakes
Do not Keyword-stuff alt text, place important images only in CSS backgrounds or block the image host. Avoid changing URLs on every load and claiming that sitemap submission or schema guarantees Google Images inclusion.
