Image Sitemap

An image sitemap lists image URLs associated with page URLs using Google's image extension to the sitemap protocol.

What it means

A site can add image tags to an existing sitemap or publish a separate image sitemap. Each page entry can contain supported image locations, including verified CDN hosts, to help Google discover files that normal Crawling might miss.

Why it matters

The extension improves discovery opportunities for complex or JavaScript-reached media but does not guarantee Crawling, Indexing or image-result placement. Entries should reflect images on canonical, indexable landing pages and URLs that Google can fetch.

Example

A gallery page lists its Canonical URL and the stable CDN locations of twelve original photographs. Both domains are verified, robots rules allow the files and removed photographs disappear from the generated sitemap.

Common mistakes

Do not add blocked, broken or unrelated image URLs, treat sitemap inclusion as an Indexing guarantee or use deprecated caption and license tags. Avoid listing transient signed URLs that expire before crawlers request them.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

Landing-page canonical, image URLs, HTTP status, robots access, CDN host verification

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can find missing valuable images and sitemap entries pointing to blocked, redirected, expired or unrelated files.

Recommendation prepared

The proposal adds only verified page-image relationships and removes entries that fail access or canonical rules.

Approval preview

The user reviews each sampled landing page, image URL, host and sitemap change before approval.

Execution

AYSA can update approved WordPress image sitemap output; external generators or CDN ownership may require their administrators.

Verification

AYSA validates XML, fetches every changed sample, checks robots and confirms the image sitemap is discoverable from the sitemap index.

Limits

AYSA cannot force Google to crawl or index a submitted image and lacks private Search Console evidence unless connected.
