Impressions

Search Console impressions count how often a link or search-result element attributed to a property could be seen under Google's rules for that result type and report.

What it means

The visibility threshold varies by surface and element: a standard result can count on the loaded results page, while an item in a carousel, expandable result, Discover feed or AI feature may need to enter view. Property aggregation can combine multiple links from the same property into one impression, whereas page grouping can count distinct canonical URLs separately.

Why it matters

An impression is the denominator for Search Console CTR and evidence of eligible search exposure, but it is not a unique person, a pageview, proof that the snippet was read or a complete measure of demand.

Example

For one web-Search query and device segment, a property can record one impression even when two of its pages appear; grouping by page can instead show one impression for each qualifying Canonical URL.

Common mistakes

Do not call impressions reach, add incompatible Search and Discover counts, compare property totals with page-grouped totals, ignore search appearance rules or treat more impressions as proof of better relevance.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

property, search type, search appearance, dimensions, aggregation, date range, data state

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can flag an impression comparison whose property, surface, grouping, result appearance or freshness changed between periods.

Recommendation prepared

The review restores a comparable Search Analytics request and separates exposure changes from indexing, ranking and snippet hypotheses.

Approval preview

The user sees the exact query contract, affected owned pages and any separately proposed content or technical investigation.

Execution

AYSA can rerun supported analysis and apply a separately approved supported WordPress change; it cannot manufacture impressions or alter Google's counting.

Verification

The same request is repeated after the documented processing interval while current page and index evidence remain separate observations.

Limits

Privacy filtering, canonical attribution, aggregation and result-specific counting limit interpretation, and impression growth does not establish attention or business impact.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is a Search Console impression a unique person?

No. It is a counted qualifying appearance under a report's result and aggregation rules, not a deduplicated audience metric.

Does a user always need to scroll to create an impression?

No. The requirement depends on the search surface and result element; some loaded results count without scrolling, while carousels and feeds can require visibility.
