Analytics

CTR

Search Console click-through rate, or CTR, is qualifying clicks divided by qualifying impressions for the same report population, expressed as a percentage.

What it means

The Search analytics API returns CTR as a fraction from zero to one for each grouped row. Property and page aggregation can produce different click and impression counts, while query, country, device, search appearance, search type and date filters redefine the denominator.

Why it matters

CTR can reveal a change in how often an appearance leads to a click, but it combines snippet appeal, intent, position, brand familiarity and result layout rather than isolating one cause.

Example

A comparable page-query-device segment with 84 Clicks and 2,400 Impressions has a Search Console CTR of 3.5%; a property-level total should not be substituted because its counting population differs.

Common mistakes

Do not calculate CTR from mismatched filters, compare organic and paid definitions without labels, treat zero Impressions as a meaningful rate, ignore position mix or promise Clicks from a title rewrite.

How AYSA handles this

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can flag a CTR calculation with incompatible numerator and denominator populations or a comparison confounded by material mix changes.

Recommendation prepared

The review constructs a stable segment and tests a bounded snippet or content hypothesis only when the page and query evidence support it.

Approval preview

The reviewer sees the formula, source rows, confounders and exact supported owned-page change before approval.

Execution

AYSA can apply an approved supported WordPress title, description or content change; it cannot guarantee Search presentation or clicks.

Verification

The rendered page is checked immediately and the same Search Console segment is compared after sufficient processing and observation time.

Limits

CTR is an aggregate association, not a causal diagnostic, and privacy filtering, position mix and result-format changes constrain comparisons.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

What is the Search Console CTR formula?

It is qualifying clicks divided by qualifying impressions for the same reporting population, usually displayed as a percentage.

Does a higher CTR prove that a title change worked?

No. Position, query mix, search appearance, competition and demand can also change; a causal claim needs a suitable comparison and supporting evidence.
