Average position
Search Console average position is the mean topmost position attributed to a property or page across its qualifying Google Search impressions in the selected report.
What it means
For each impression Google records the topmost result position for the aggregation level, then averages those position values. Result elements can contain multiple links at one position, property grouping can use the property's highest result and filters over query, page, country, device or appearance change the population being averaged.
Why it matters
The metric summarizes a distribution of observed appearances; it does not identify a stable rank for one query, reveal every result position or replace fixed-location Rank tracking.
Example
If a filtered page-query pair records qualifying Impressions at topmost positions 2, 4 and 9, its average position is 5; mixing additional devices or queries changes both the population and the average.
Common mistakes
Do not call average position an exact current rank, average pre-aggregated averages, compare different query universes, ignore property-versus-page grouping or interpret a lower number without Impressions and Clicks.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
aggregation level, query universe, page filter, country, device, search appearance, impressions
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can flag an average-position comparison whose population, grouping or impression distribution changed between periods.
Recommendation prepared
The review rebuilds a comparable segment and pairs the average with impressions, clicks and fixed-query evidence where available.
Approval preview
The user sees the exact population, distribution warning and any affected owned pages proposed for a separate change.
Execution
AYSA can run supported analysis and apply a separately approved WordPress improvement; it cannot set or guarantee Google positions.
Verification
The same segment is queried later and stored beside, not in place of, fixed-query rank observations and live page checks.
Limits
Average position hides distribution shape and personalization context, and movement alone does not prove a ranking cause or business outcome.
