Internal link depth
Internal link depth is the minimum number of crawlable internal-link steps needed to reach a page from a chosen site entry point.
What it means
Depth depends on the crawl seed, canonical graph and whether navigation links expose real href destinations. It is not the same as URL folder depth, visual menu nesting or the total number of Clicks a particular user happens to make.
Why it matters
A very deep important page may be harder for users and crawlers to discover and may indicate weak category relationships. Depth is a diagnostic metric, not a universal ranking threshold; some specialized pages are appropriately several levels from the homepage.
Example
If the homepage links to a category, the category to a subcategory and the subcategory to a product, the product has depth three from that seed. Adding a relevant featured-category link may shorten the path, while changing `/a/b/c/` to `/c/` without new links does not.
Common mistakes
Do not promise that every page must be within three Clicks, calculate depth from an incomplete crawl or confuse shorter URLs with shallower links. Avoid adding irrelevant navigation solely to reduce a score.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
Canonical crawl graph, seed pages, href links, redirected edges, page type and business priority
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can calculate shortest paths and flag high-priority pages whose depth is inconsistent with their role in the site.
Recommendation prepared
The recommendation names a relevant source page and anchor context that can shorten the path without bloating global navigation.
Approval preview
The user reviews the current path, proposed edge and pages whose depth would change before approval.
Execution
AYSA can insert accepted contextual links on supported WordPress pages; menu redesigns require the owning design or development workflow.
Verification
AYSA recrawls the canonical graph and recomputes depth from the same seeds to confirm the expected path exists.
Limits
Depth varies with crawl scope and seed selection and cannot by itself predict rankings or crawl frequency.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Is internal link depth the same as URL folder depth?
No. Link depth measures graph steps from a chosen start page; the number of folders in the URL does not determine how many links are required to reach it.
