Product canonical
A Product canonical is the representative product URL preferred across duplicate or very similar paths, tracking parameters or variant views for one merchandise identity.
What it means
The target should expose the complete purchasable item and align with internal links, sitemap entries and product markup. Optional variant parameters can point to a base product URL, but a variant that needs an independently discoverable offer, URL, availability or structured-data identity requires a deliberate model rather than automatic consolidation.
Why it matters
A stable product representative concentrates navigation and measurement while preserving variant accuracy, purchasability and consistency between visible content and structured product data.
Example
Tracking URLs and a default blue-color parameter point to /products/alpine-jacket/, while a separately stocked limited-edition model retains its own self-canonical page and offer details.
Common mistakes
Do not canonicalize unavailable products to unrelated replacements, merge distinct models, hide variant-specific price or availability, use a redirected target or let product markup identify a different URL.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
product identifier, variant attribute, URL, price, availability, canonical, Product markup, internal link
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can detect duplicate product paths, inconsistent variant targets, canonicals to unavailable or redirected pages and markup that names a different representative.
Recommendation prepared
AYSA prepares a product-family map that separates harmless URL aliases, optional variant views and independently maintained offers.
Approval preview
The user sees identifiers, visible offers, variant behavior, markup, proposed target, affected links, inventory dependencies and rollback.
Execution
AYSA can apply approved canonical, template, link and sitemap changes on supported owned stores; product identity, stock and commercial claims remain merchant-controlled.
Verification
AYSA crawls representative product families, tests selectors and responses, compares visible offers with markup and confirms each approved target returns 200.
Limits
The evidence remains URL-, crawler-, platform- and time-bound; recommendations, generated drafts, approvals, crawls and monitoring do not automatically certify AI Act or legal compliance, and applicable Article 50 transparency duties require a separate role-and-use assessment from 2 August 2026.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Should every product variant use the base product canonical?
Not automatically. Optional views can consolidate, while independently meaningful offers need an intentional URL and identity model.
Can a discontinued product canonicalize to any newer product?
No. A different replacement is not a duplicate merely because both products occupy the same category.
