URL parameter

A URL parameter is a name-value component in a URL query string used to pass state such as a filter, page number, sort order or tracking value.

What it means

Parameters begin after a question mark and are normally separated with ampersands. Different parameter values create distinct URLs even when the returned primary content is unchanged, so a site needs consistent rules for functional states, analytics tags, Pagination and filter combinations.

Why it matters

Uncontrolled parameters can multiply crawlable URLs, fragment reporting and obscure the preferred canonical address. Useful parameters can also represent legitimate pages, so removing or blocking them indiscriminately may break navigation or hide valuable filtered content.

Example

`?utm_source=newsletter` may return the same product as the clean URL and can canonicalize to it, while `?page=2` represents the second collection page and should have a stable crawlable URL. A filter such as `?size=42` deserves separate treatment only when its result set is intentionally useful.

Common mistakes

Do not treat every question mark as Duplicate content, use nonstandard separators that crawlers may misread or allow arbitrary parameter order and repetition. Avoid canonicalizing paginated pages to page one when their item sets are distinct.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

Parameter names and values, content changes, canonical target, internal-link generation, response and result count

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can cluster parameter patterns and distinguish tracking-only variants, pagination and filters that materially change the returned set.

Recommendation prepared

The proposal assigns an explicit linking, canonical, crawl or index policy to each reviewed parameter family.

Approval preview

The user sees representative URLs, their content differences, estimated combinations and the effect of each proposed rule.

Execution

AYSA can update supported WordPress links and metadata; application routing and analytics requirements may require owner or developer changes.

Verification

AYSA retests parameter ordering, duplicate values, empty results and canonical output across representative templates.

Limits

AYSA cannot safely generalize from a small sample when application behavior changes by user, locale or inventory.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Are parameterized URLs automatically bad for SEO?
