Canonicalization

Canonicalization is the process of selecting one representative URL from a group of duplicate or substantially similar pages.

What it means

Google clusters pages whose primary content is equivalent and selects a canonical member for Indexing and search display. Site owners can express a preference through permanent redirects, rel=canonical annotations, sitemap inclusion and consistent internal links, but Google may choose a different representative.

Why it matters

Clear canonicalization reduces conflicting URL signals, concentrates measurement on a preferred address and limits unnecessary Crawling of alternatives. It does not make legitimately different pages interchangeable and should follow a content-equivalence decision.

Example

A product is reachable through a clean URL and several tracking-parameter variants. Keep the clean page self-canonical, point equivalent variants to it, list only the clean URL in the sitemap and use it in internal links. A color variant with distinct inventory and search value may require its own canonical instead.

Common mistakes

Do not canonicalize unrelated pages merely to reduce index counts, point every duplicate to the homepage or combine a canonical with contradictory sitemap and redirect signals. Avoid using Robots.txt or removal tools as substitutes for choosing a representative URL.

How AYSA handles this

Signals reviewed

Rendered canonical, redirect target, sitemap membership, internal-link destination, content similarity

Problem AYSA can identify

AYSA can identify equivalent URL groups with inconsistent or circular canonical signals and pages pointing to an ineligible destination.

Recommendation prepared

The proposal names the preferred representative, supporting evidence and every redirect, canonical, sitemap or link signal that needs alignment.

Approval preview

The user reviews each clustered URL, content comparison and proposed signal changes before approval.

Execution

AYSA can apply approved canonical and internal-link changes on supported WordPress templates; proxy and application routing may require developer deployment.

Verification

AYSA refetches every group member and confirms the intended canonical, response, sitemap and link destinations are consistent.

Limits

AYSA cannot force Google's selected canonical and does not consolidate pages whose equivalence is uncertain.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Can Google choose a different canonical from the one a site declares?

Yes. A declared canonical is a strong preference, not an absolute rule; Google evaluates page similarity and other signals when selecting the representative URL.
