URL Canonicalization
URL Canonicalization is the selection of one representative URL from a set of duplicate or sufficiently similar URLs for a defined system or purpose.
What it means
In Google Search, Canonicalization is Google’s selection process, while publishers can provide signals such as redirects, rel=canonical and sitemap inclusion. This differs from URI normalization in RFC 3986, which compares syntactic variants such as scheme or host case, percent encoding and dot segments; syntax normalization alone does not decide which web page should represent a content set.
Why it matters
Separating system selection, publisher preference and URI normalization prevents teams from treating string cleanup as an Indexing decision or a declared annotation as guaranteed.
Example
HTTP and HTTPS variants plus tracking URLs may represent the same product content; the publisher aligns signals toward HTTPS, while Google still evaluates and selects the representative URL.
Common mistakes
Do not assume every parameter is removable, lowercase case-sensitive paths, merge dissimilar pages, call normalization a redirect or claim the declared canonical must be selected.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
URL component, response status, content similarity, redirect, rel=canonical, internal link, sitemap, selected canonical
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can identify syntactic aliases, conflicting preferred targets, parameters with unknown semantics and duplicate sets whose pages are not actually equivalent.
Recommendation prepared
AYSA separates safe normalization from content-level canonical decisions and prepares one evidence-backed signal plan for approval.
Approval preview
The user sees URL components, content comparison, affected requests, chosen target, conflicts, expected behavior, risk and rollback.
Execution
AYSA can apply approved normalization redirects and canonical signals on supported owned systems; it cannot force an external search engine’s selection.
Verification
AYSA tests URL resolution and content equivalence, crawls canonical signals and records available Search selection evidence after processing.
Limits
The evidence remains site-, market-, language-, platform- and time-bound; recommendations, generated drafts, approvals, crawls and monitoring do not automatically certify AI Act or legal compliance, and applicable Article 50 transparency duties require a separate role-and-use assessment from 2 August 2026.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Is URL Canonicalization the same as URI normalization?
No. URI normalization compares syntactic forms; Search canonicalization selects a representative page from duplicate content.
Can a publisher choose Google's canonical with certainty?
No. Redirects and rel=canonical are strong signals, but Google performs the final Search selection.
