Unlinked mention
An unlinked mention is a source occurrence resolved to an identifiable entity or resource without a hyperlink to its canonical reference.
What it means
The observation must retain the source, passage, candidate entity, resolution evidence and capture time. A name can be ambiguous, and a textual reference may be criticism, comparison, disclosure or incidental context. Schema.org similarly treats a mention as a reference to a concept without requiring the work to be about that concept.
Why it matters
Entity resolution and context prevent namesakes, navigation text and copied passages from being counted as independent recognition or automatic link opportunities.
Example
A standards report names “Atlas” beside a protocol version but provides no link; identifiers and surrounding text resolve it to the software project rather than the logistics company, while Outreach suitability remains unscored.
Common mistakes
Do not treat every text match as the target entity, infer positive sentiment, assume endorsement, count syndicated copies independently, demand a link, conceal relationship history, discard passage context or promise ranking value.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
source, text span, context, candidate entities, identifiers, canonical reference, duplicate family, capture time
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can identify ambiguous text matches, copied occurrences and mentions classified as positive or outreach-ready without evidence.
Recommendation prepared
The workflow resolves the entity, preserves passage context and leaves sentiment and outreach as separate reviewed decisions.
Approval preview
The reviewer sees source evidence, candidate entities, AI-assisted resolution provenance, uncertainty, duplicates and proposed classification.
Execution
AYSA can store approved mention records and prepare separately authorized outreach; it cannot require an independent publisher to add a link.
Verification
Later captures retain source and resolution history rather than silently changing the original observation.
Limits
Open-web coverage and entity resolution are incomplete, and provenance or human review does not automatically certify AI Act or legal compliance.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Is every unlinked mention a link-building opportunity?
No. Context, publisher independence, reader value and relationship history require separate review.
Does an unlinked mention prove that a source endorses the entity?
No. A source may criticize, compare, disclose or only identify the entity.
