URL Parameters
URL Parameters are application-defined values carried in a URL, commonly as key-value pairs in its query component, that can alter selection, presentation, tracking or processing.
What it means
RFC 3986 separates the query from the hierarchical path but leaves most parameter semantics to the implementation. Consequently, `?page=2`, `?color=green`, `?sort=price` and a tracking code can create very different resources or views even though they share punctuation.
Why it matters
A parameter inventory based on actual output prevents teams from blocking useful Pagination or variants while allowing transient sessions, tracking aliases and unbounded combinations to be controlled deliberately.
Example
On one store, `?color=green` selects a purchasable variant, `?page=2` exposes the next listing segment and `?utm_source=x` leaves the primary content unchanged; each receives a different crawl and canonical decision.
Common mistakes
Do not classify parameters only by name, assume every query URL is duplicate, strip values before testing application behavior, decode delimiters in the wrong component or block a URL that must be crawled for its canonical signal.
