Ranking Volatility
Ranking volatility is the amount and distribution of position movement across repeated observations for a fixed query, page or query panel.
What it means
The method must name the engine, location, device, result type, observation times, query panel, missing-result treatment and statistic, such as median absolute movement or the share of queries moving beyond a threshold. Search Console Average position is aggregated and is not a substitute for a fixed rank-tracking panel.
Why it matters
A stable method distinguishes widespread movement from normal personalization, result-feature changes, sampling differences or one unstable query without assigning a cause prematurely.
Example
For 300 fixed mobile queries checked daily in one location, median absolute movement rises from 1.2 to 4.8 positions and 31% move by more than five positions; the report records a volatility event but does not declare an update.
Common mistakes
Do not mix locations or devices, change the panel, treat missing results as rank zero, infer an algorithm update from correlation, or compare a tracker position with Search Console Average position as identical units.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
query panel, engine, location, device, result type, timestamp, position, missing-result state
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can detect an unusual movement distribution or a broken comparison caused by panel, locale, device or result-type drift.
Recommendation prepared
The investigation checks official update timing, site changes, indexing, demand and affected page groups before preparing an action.
Approval preview
The user sees the fixed panel, volatility statistic, affected queries, official annotations and uncertainty.
Execution
AYSA can apply an approved supported WordPress correction when independent evidence identifies one; it cannot stabilize or control search rankings.
Verification
Technical corrections are verified immediately while rank movement is reassessed later under the unchanged panel and method.
Limits
Rank observations vary by context and sampling, and volatility alone neither identifies an update nor proves a site problem.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Does high ranking volatility prove a Google update?
No. It documents movement under one method; the official dashboard and additional technical, demand and page evidence are needed to investigate cause.
Is Search Console average position a rank-volatility series?
No. It is an aggregate over qualifying impressions and can change when the impression population changes.
