Redirect Conflict
A Redirect Conflict occurs when the redirect behavior for a URL contradicts another intended destination, canonical signal or request-handling rule.
What it means
Examples include HTTP and HTTPS variants redirecting to different hosts, a source redirecting to page B while page B declares page C canonical, device or user-agent branches reaching different final URLs, and competing server, CMS or CDN rules. The conflict is established from the complete request path and rendered signals, not from a configuration row viewed in isolation.
Why it matters
Contradictory behavior can split users and crawlers across destinations, hide an obsolete rule, weaken migration evidence and make rollback unsafe because no single owner can state which result is authoritative.
Example
An old product URL returns 301 to the replacement product, but the replacement template declares the retired URL canonical; the redirect and canonical annotation therefore advocate opposite representatives.
Common mistakes
Do not call every Redirect chain a conflict, test only a browser-cached response, ignore host and protocol variants, assume a canonical overrides navigation or change the winning rule before identifying every active layer.
