AI Surface
An AI Surface is a named and versioned product context through which a person can provide input to, receive output from or otherwise interact with an AI system.
What it means
A surface identifies the provider, product, access mode, deployment context and relevant version. It can contain several interfaces and capabilities, including search, generation or task execution. The surface is not the underlying model, a single screen, a captured response or evidence that every visible feature uses the same retrieval process.
Why it matters
A stable surface boundary prevents observations from one product mode, account state or release from being generalized to every experience offered by the provider.
Example
A Monitoring record names Google Search web as the surface, logged-out access as the account context and AI Mode as the capability; the query control and response region are recorded as interface components, while the returned answer is stored separately.
Common mistakes
Do not equate a surface with a model, merge web and mobile contexts, omit account or regional availability, infer hidden architecture, treat one capture as permanent behavior or assume every answer uses search.
