AI Search Surface
An AI Search Surface is an AI surface or product mode that accepts an information need and can return a search-informed response with identifiable web sources or result links.
What it means
The classification requires visible or officially documented search behavior for the named mode. Google documents AI Overviews and AI Mode as distinct Search features whose responses and supporting links can differ. A generic generated answer without declared search activity, a result boundary and a source-event rule is not automatically an AI Search observation.
Why it matters
Search-specific scope keeps provider, retrieval state, citations and supporting links attached to the product mode that actually produced them.
Example
A test records Google AI Mode and ChatGPT Search as two surfaces with separate prompt, locale and link rules; an ordinary chat response with no search indicator is excluded rather than counted as an absent citation.
