Cumulative Layout Shift
Cumulative Layout Shift measures the largest burst of unexpected visible layout movements during a page visit.
What it means
CLS is a unitless stable Core Web Vital. Each unexpected shift reflects how much of the viewport is affected and how far unstable elements move; shifts are grouped into session windows, and the largest accumulated window becomes the page value.
Why it matters
Unexpected movement can make readers lose their place or activate the wrong control. A good score of 0.1 or less at the 75th percentile gives teams a common stability target, while shift Attribution identifies the actual moving and initiating elements.
Example
A promotional banner inserted above an article after consent pushes the headline and navigation downward. Reserving the banner's space or placing it without displacing existing content prevents that shift; merely compressing its image does not.
Common mistakes
Do not blame every animation, because movements close to user input may be expected, or reserve incorrect aspect ratios that still change later. Avoid checking only initial load when ads, fonts or widgets shift content during a longer session.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
Layout-shift entries, unstable elements, shift sources, image dimensions, late DOM insertions
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can locate templates where images, fonts, banners or widgets move visible content without reserved space.
Recommendation prepared
The proposal identifies the initiating resource and specifies dimensions, containment or placement changes for each affected component.
Approval preview
The user reviews a trace or visual reproduction, the moving elements and the exact CSS or markup adjustment.
Execution
AYSA can apply approved dimension and layout changes in supported WordPress templates; third-party widgets may require vendor configuration.
Verification
AYSA reruns the same viewport and interaction path, checks shift attribution and confirms intended motion still works.
Limits
Personalized advertising and external widgets can vary between sessions, so complete elimination may depend on third parties.
