Faceted URL
A Faceted URL is an address that represents a selected filter state produced by a faceted navigation system.
What it means
It may encode attributes in query values or path segments and can return a useful stable subset, a duplicate of a broader category, an empty result or one of an enormous number of combinations. The decision to index, canonicalize, block or return 404 must follow the state's value and behavior, not the presence of filters alone.
Why it matters
State-level rules preserve high-value curated subsets while preventing nonsensical combinations and near-infinite crawl spaces from consuming resources or obscuring new content.
Example
`/shoes/trail/waterproof/` remains a maintained landing page with unique inventory and copy, while repeated filters and zero-result combinations return 404 and temporary sort-only states stay outside the sitemap.
Common mistakes
Do not index every combination, redirect empty states to a generic page, permit duplicate filter orderings, rely on canonical alone to stop Crawling or suppress a valuable subset without reviewing demand and inventory.
How AYSA handles this
Signals reviewed
filter key, value combination, inventory count, visible copy, response, canonical, inlinks, crawl frequency
Problem AYSA can identify
AYSA can flag duplicate orderings, unbounded combinations, empty 200 pages, valuable states collapsed to parents and filter URLs with conflicting signals.
Recommendation prepared
AYSA prepares a facet-state matrix assigning indexable, canonicalized, crawl-controlled or 404 behavior with generation limits.
Approval preview
The user sees sampled states, inventory and content evidence, demand when available, proposed rule, affected templates and rollback.
Execution
AYSA can apply approved owned-store routing, canonical, link, sitemap and supported crawl controls; merchandising decisions require accountable confirmation.
Verification
AYSA tests allowed and rejected combinations, crawls state transitions, validates final responses and confirms high-value states remain reachable.
Limits
The evidence remains URL-, application-, crawler-, platform- and time-bound; recommendations, generated drafts, approvals, crawls and monitoring do not automatically certify AI Act or legal compliance, and applicable Article 50 transparency duties require a separate role-and-use assessment from 2 August 2026.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Should every Faceted URL be blocked?
No. A maintained subset with distinct inventory and user value can justify an indexable landing page.
What should an impossible filter combination return?
Google's crawler guidance recommends a true 404 for empty, duplicate or nonsensical combinations where feasible.
